Making a healthier journey easier to navigate.
Redesigning My Healthy Weight, the patient portal for TBC Healthcare’s NHS weight management programme, to help patients find what they need and follow their programme with greater clarity.

My Healthy Weight — redesigned patient portal
01 / THE CHALLENGE
An essential service, with room to improve.
My Healthy Weight was already supporting patients through an NHS weight management programme. But navigating the portal, especially on mobile, wasn't always straightforward.
THE CONTEXT
The portal was central to the programme.
Patients relied on it to access programme content and keep track of their progress. The challenge was to make the experience easier to use without losing sight of the existing service.
WHAT I WAS WORKING WITH
THE OPPORTUNITY
Make the journey clearer, not just the screens prettier.
Rather than redesigning everything, I focused on understanding how patients used the portal, where they struggled, and which improvements would make the biggest difference within the available scope.

02 / UNDERSTANDING PATIENTS
Listening before redesigning.
To understand where the portal could better support patients, I brought together feedback and research from several sources before moving into interface decisions.
PATIENT PERSPECTIVES
Looking beyond the interface.
Patient feedback and surveys helped surface points of confusion and areas where patients needed clearer guidance. Personas helped keep those needs visible throughout the redesign.

EXPLORING EXISTING EXPERIENCES
Finding patterns and opportunities.
Competitor analysis and app reviews provided another perspective on how similar services organise content and communicate progress.
WHAT THE RESEARCH POINTED TO
Clarity mattered as much as functionality.
The research gave me a stronger basis for examining how patients found information, understood their programme and moved between tasks.
DESIGN PRIORITY
Make the important things easier to find and understand.
These findings informed the next stage: reviewing the portal's information architecture and identifying opportunities to improve navigation, content and interface patterns.
03 / FINDING THE FRICTION
Making the journey easier to follow.
With the research in hand, I looked at how the portal was organised and where its structure made everyday tasks harder than they needed to be.
EXISTING EXPERIENCE
Finding the friction in the journey.
I reviewed the existing portal alongside patient feedback and usage findings to understand where people experienced friction. This helped identify challenges with finding information, as well as the features patients relied on most.

RETHINKING THE STRUCTURE
Organising around patients' needs.
I explored ways to make key information and programme content easier to discover, using clearer groupings and navigation patterns. The goal was to simplify the journey without unnecessarily rebuilding the whole service.

THE DESIGN PRINCIPLE
Less searching. More confidence.
The direction was to reduce the effort needed to find relevant information and understand what to do next. These structural decisions provided a foundation for the interface redesign and later iterations.
Turning patient insights into a clearer experience.
With the research and information architecture established, I moved into redesigning the portal's key screens. The focus was on making information easier to find, simplifying interactions and creating a more consistent experience.

Taking the guesswork out of symptom reporting.
When patients log symptoms associated with GLP-1 injections, they're asked to assess their severity. But labels like High, Moderate and Low can mean different things to different people. With a diverse patient group in mind, I designed supporting descriptions for each severity level to make the options easier to understand and less open to interpretation. I then worked with clinicians to review and approve the wording, balancing accessibility with clinical accuracy. The aim was to help patients report their symptoms with greater confidence, while supporting more consistent information for their care team.

05 / OUTCOMES & REFLECTION
A clearer experience, built around patients.
The redesign brought together patient research, information architecture and interface improvements to create a more considered experience for people using My Healthy Weight.

What changed
Making information easier to navigate
Reorganised key areas of the portal and refined the interface to help patients find relevant content and understand their next steps.
Working within real-world constraints
Developed improvements with the existing platform and delivery requirements in mind, balancing patient needs with what could realistically be implemented.
Connecting research to design decisions
Used patient feedback, research and interface exploration to inform the redesign, rather than treating visual improvements as the starting point.
Good healthcare design is about reducing uncertainty.
This project reinforced the importance of understanding the people behind the interface. Clear navigation, accessible content and considered interactions can make a meaningful difference when patients are trying to manage their health.
